Intrauterine insemination (IUI), also known as artificial insemination, is a simple treatment procedure in which healthy sperms are washed, concentrated, and injected directly into a woman’s uterus during the time of ovulation.
Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a safe and less invasive treatment option which is often one of the first fertility treatments for couples who wish to become pregnant.
It takes just a few minutes and requires no anaesthesia .
IUI may be indicated if you:
- Have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility.
- Have cervical problems that prevent sperm penetration.
- Have been diagnosed with mild male factor infertility.
- Are unable to have regular sexual intercourse.
- Need to use donor sperm.
IUI treatment is not recommended in patients who have severe male factor infertility or blocked fallopian tubes or severe endometriosis.
The goal of this treatment is to increase the number of sperms that reach the fallopian tube and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization.
For this procedure, your fertility specialist will insert a small, sterile catheter through the cervical opening into the uterine cavity. The prepared sperm sample will then be introduced into the uterus via the catheter. The procedure is entirely painless and takes only a few minutes to complete .
